Zelensky made the statement amidst reports that Russian forces loyal to the Putin administration were struggling with political infighting over the availability of essential ammunition supplies and preferential treatment. Zelensky’s counter-attack plans have not been made public, as he aims to take the invading Russian forces by surprise.
“I am not ready to communicate with you, to say when we will be advancing,” he stated in a recent press conference. “Because to some extent, this prepares the enemy. And therefore, I would like it to be an unpleasant surprise, not the other way around.”
The Ukrainian president expressed optimism that the surprise would be effective, but refrained from stating whether Ukraine would regain full sovereignty by the end of the conflict. Zelensky acknowledged the battle is still ongoing and it is too early to make any such predictions.
The statement from Zelensky comes in the wake of an online video uploaded by Wagner Group, a paramilitary squad founded by Yevgeny Prigozhin. In the film, an unnamed senior Russian official was referred to as a “happy grandfather” who “thinks that he is good” but is a “complete asshole.”
The recording has led Western commentators to speculate Prigozhin was referring to Putin, indicating a possible rift in Russian unity regarding the ongoing conflict. The tension between Ukraine and Russia has been escalating since the 2014 annexation of Crimea, with sporadic violence in eastern Ukraine.
