Viral Magnet Fishers Accused Of Squatting In Family Member’s Home

Barbie Agostini and James Kane, who became famous for pulling a $100,000 safe out of a lake while magnet fishing, are now facing serious accusations from Barbie’s sister, Kathleen Agostini. Kathleen claims the couple owes over $15,000 in back rent for a Queens apartment they have been living in and refuse to leave.

Their lease ended in October, but the couple has stayed in the apartment, despite their substantial find. Kathleen initiated eviction proceedings in January, expressing concerns that their viral fame would overshadow their actions and allow them to continue squatting. She described their behavior as bullying and is worried they might become public favorites.

In addition to the rent issue, Kathleen accuses Kane and Barbie of causing extensive damage to the apartment. She alleges that the chemicals Kane used to clean items found during their magnet fishing adventures corroded the plumbing, resulting in a ceiling collapse above her bedroom. Kane disputes these claims, arguing that the landlord has harassed them and even revealed their personal information online.

John Francis, representing the couple, explained that the court ordered Kathleen to repair the property and allowed the couple to remain until the dispute is resolved. He also noted that Kathleen rejected rental payments from the couple, further complicating the situation. Kathleen counters that financial difficulties have prevented her from making the necessary repairs.

The couple’s case underscores the challenges of resolving tenant-landlord disputes, particularly when they involve family members and public figures. Kathleen is determined to see the matter settled in court, fearing the couple will not pay or move out without a judge’s intervention.
