President-elect Donald Trump has issued a sharp response to Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino amid escalating tensions over the Panama Canal. Trump suggested the United States could reconsider its approach to the canal if Panama continues to impose what he described as unfair practices on the vital trade route.
In a recent Truth Social post, Trump underscored the strategic importance of the canal to U.S. commerce and national security. “The Panama Canal is considered a VITAL National Asset for the United States, due to its critical role to America’s Economy and National Security,” he wrote. “A secure Panama Canal is crucial for U.S. Commerce, and rapid deployment of the Navy, from the Atlantic to the Pacific.”

Trump highlighted the U.S. as the canal’s primary user, with over 70% of transits connected to American ports. He also noted the immense cost of constructing the canal, emphasizing the lives lost and resources spent. “The Panama Canal opened for business 110 years ago, and was built at HUGE cost to the United States in lives and treasure – 38,000 American men died from infected mosquitos in the jungles during construction,” he said.

Mulino responded firmly, asserting Panama’s sovereignty over the canal. “Every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent zone belongs to Panama, and will continue to do so,” Mulino said in a statement. “The sovereignty and independence of our country are not negotiable.”
Trump is 100% right!

Trump took further aim at Panama’s handling of the canal, accusing the country of charging excessive fees for its use. He also criticized China’s involvement in its management, pointing to former President Jimmy Carter’s decision to relinquish U.S. control. “It was not given for Panama to charge the United States, its Navy, and corporations exorbitant prices and rates of passage,” Trump said. “This complete ‘rip-off’ of our Country will immediately stop.”

Mulino defended the canal’s pricing structure, explaining that rates are determined through public hearings and reflect market conditions, operating costs, and modernization needs.

Jimmy Carter then gave it away to apologize for America.
Trump wants it back.
