Trump Administration Plans To Sell Off Pelosi Federal Building In SF

President Donald Trump’s administration is moving forward with plans to sell the Nancy Pelosi Federal Building and another major government property in San Francisco, citing wasteful spending and worsening crime in the area.

A GSA report classified both the Pelosi Federal Building and the federal offices at 50 United Nations Plaza as “non-core” properties that could be auctioned off. The move is part of a broader push to downsize federal real estate holdings and reduce government inefficiency.

The Pelosi Federal Building, located at Mission and 7th Street, has been a symbol of the city’s decline. Crime, drug use and stolen goods markets have made the surrounding area unsafe. In 2023, federal employees assigned to the building were directed to work remotely due to safety concerns. Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) had previously called for shutting it down, pointing to ongoing drug activity on the premises.

Despite the obvious reasons for selling off unused buildings, California Democrats are objecting. Former Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) accused Trump of targeting political opponents and claimed leasing new office space would be more expensive. However, with federal workers rarely using these offices, keeping them empty while taxpayers continue paying for them makes little sense.

Developer Andy Ball, who was involved in the building’s construction, called it a poor investment, estimating its costs were significantly higher than if it had been built privately.

The administration’s broader plan includes eliminating wasteful agencies, with Trump’s latest executive order taking aim at the Presidio Trust, which manages San Francisco’s Presidio Park. Pelosi, who helped secure $200 million in federal funding for the park in 2023, has vowed to fight the cuts. Meanwhile, downtown San Francisco faces an office vacancy crisis, with rates reaching 37% citywide and 55% in the Mid-Market district where the Pelosi Federal Building stands.
