Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Kamala Harris appears to have backfired. According to a recent NBC News poll, Swift’s favorability rating has dropped significantly since she voiced her support for Harris following the first presidential debate in September.
The poll shows that 47% of Republicans now view Swift negatively, up from 26% last year. Only 12% of Republicans still hold a positive opinion of the singer, down from 28% in 2023. The data suggests that Swift’s endorsement of Harris did not sit well with many conservative voters, who are increasingly critical of Harris’ policies and political stance.
The decline in Swift’s popularity isn’t limited to Republicans. Her support among independents has also dropped, with only 26% now viewing her favorably, down from 34% last year. Even though Swift encouraged her fans to do their own research and vote as they see fit, her decision to publicly endorse Harris is being seen by many as more political than personal.
The impact of Swift’s endorsement has been muted even among Democrats. Although 58% of Democrats view her positively, that number has only slightly increased from 53% last year. Swift’s attempt to sway public opinion seems to have had little impact on the electorate, with a recent YouGov poll showing that most voters aren’t swayed by celebrity endorsements.
The timing of Swift’s endorsement, coinciding with growing unrest among young progressives unhappy with Harris’ foreign policy stance, may have further limited its impact. Some of Harris’ younger supporters have shifted their attention to third-party candidates, signaling that Swift’s political influence may not have the broad reach Democrats had hoped for.
