It is patently clear that there are at least some members of the Republican Party establishment who are not so keen on the idea of former President Trump making a run for the White House in 2024.
It was only a few hours before Trump announced his intention to take the White House back when Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) said “nobody’s gonna care” whether or not he entered the race.
The remark came in Orlando at a Republican Governors Association panel on “the Future of the GOP.” Sununu brushed the planned announcement aside by saying that the 2024 election was too far away for people to pay it any thought.
“The political atmosphere today will be 180 degrees different six months from now, 180 degrees six months after that, and then we’ll get to June of ’24. … We are so far away from all of it,” he said. “Whatever announcements may or may not be happening tonight, nobody’s gonna care. We have so far to go. … There’s no job we can’t handle, but we are a long way off from ’24.”
Despite the fact that Sununu did not identify the former President by name, the implication was quite clear. As The Washington Free Beacon noted, the former president had been preparing for his 2024 campaign announcement at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
“In order to make America great and glorious again. I am tonight announcing my candidacy for president of the United States,” Trump announced to a crowd of supporters later that evening.
“The Washington establishment wants to silence us, but we will not let them do that,” he said.
Trump complimented the attendees, telling them, “You and all those watching are the heart and soul of this incredible movement in the greatest country in the history of the world.”
Other conservatives have been far more supportive of the former president’s plan to run, including comedian Terrence K. Williams, who posted a video of himself and others dancing in celebration after the announcement.
“I’m at the Mar-a-Lago and I can’t express how HAPPY I am about President Trump running again,” he wrote online.
“MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
“Donald Trump will be the 47th President of the United States of America!”
