Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) has been a reliable member of “the Squad” to make outlandish claims and stir up controversy. Rep. Tlaib may have taken things to a new high on July 7 when she called for the complete defunding of the entire U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Tlaib is calling for the most significant brush to wipe away federal agencies. She disagrees with the ongoing propaganda wars waged by Democratic members of Congress over illegal immigration and disagreements over the Biden administration’s open borders policies. To defeat the missions of the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offices, she is striking at “their parent organization DHS.”
Rep. Tlaib explained her position as follows:
“The simple answer is we must eliminate funding for CBP, ICE, and their parent organization DHS. Time after time, we have seen it, as advocates on the ground, as human services agencies on the ground, to continue to see over and over again that these agencies are inept to humanely guiding migrants through our immigration system, and instead, they further continue to terrorize migrant communities located within our community.”
During the interview, Tlaib went so far as to openly disagree with White House proposals to increase agency funding to improve technology resources at the border. The DHS has requested over $700 million to enhance land ports of entry and better detection capabilities along the border.
Tlaib complained that many of her Democrat Congressional colleagues feel that increasing technological capabilities on the border “violate human rights.” She further stated that “They rename this kind of militarization or targeting in a very inhumane way of our immigrant neighbors, but when it comes down to it, it is the same thing which is targeting communities of color in a way that to me very much violates human rights and dignity for so many of our communities.”
In addition to the added pressure on CBP and ICE that has resulted from the Biden administration’s relaxed and misguided immigration policies, state governments and law enforcement agencies have been placed under additional stress by the unprecedented numbers of illegal immigrants entering the country.
Defunding the entirety of the DHS would have impacts far beyond the obvious increased weaknesses that would ensue along the nation’s border. DHS also contains the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Secret Service, and several other critical agencies providing for national safety and security.
