Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) is calling on Washington, D.C., officials and Attorney General Merrick Garland to preserve the remains of five aborted babies, known as the “DC Five,” as evidence in potential investigations. These babies, believed to be victims of late-term abortions, were discovered in 2022 at a Washington abortion clinic run by Cesare Santangelo. Roy, along with pro-life advocates, believes the babies may have been aborted in violation of federal laws such as the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act or the Born-Alive Infant Protection Act.
In a letter sent to Garland, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, and Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith, Roy criticized the lack of investigation into the case, describing it as “lackluster.” The remains have been held by the D.C. medical examiner for over two years, and Roy expressed concern that the bodies could be disposed of without further review.
In February, Roy asked D.C. authorities to confirm that the remains would not be destroyed, but he has yet to receive a clear response. “These children deserve justice,” Roy wrote, demanding confirmation that the remains would be preserved. He emphasized that without maintaining the evidence, future congressional investigations into potential legal violations could be seriously hindered.
Roy, who serves as Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government, is leading efforts to investigate possible violations of federal abortion laws. Pro-life groups believe the babies’ deaths could reveal illegal practices, but D.C. authorities have shown little interest in pursuing the matter.
Roy’s latest letter sets a deadline of October 24 for Garland, Bowser, and Smith to provide assurances that the remains of the “DC Five” will not be destroyed. He argues that regardless of which administration is in power, these children deserve a proper investigation and justice for their deaths.
