Human traffickers are urging migrants to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, warning that stricter immigration policies will soon make crossings much more difficult. According to the Wall Street Journal, smugglers have been using WhatsApp to encourage migrants to act quickly, saying, “It’s now or never.”
The traffickers, often tied to organized crime, have told migrants that Trump’s administration will shut down illegal crossings immediately. Their messages have also sarcastically wished migrants “luck” in navigating the stricter policies once they take effect.

Trump has announced plans to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy, resume construction of the border wall, and deploy National Guard troops to the southern border. He also intends to bring back Title 42, a policy that allows for the swift removal of migrants without processing asylum claims.
While Mexican authorities have advised migrants against attempting the journey, U.S. border officials are preparing for a surge in crossings. Many migrants are reportedly trying to enter the U.S. before Trump’s changes are implemented.
