Marjorie Taylor Greene Introduces Bill Outlawing ‘Gender-Affirming Care’ On Children

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced legislation in the House on Friday that would make providing “gender-affirming care” medical procedures a federal felony.

The bill is titled the “Protect Children’s Innocence Act,” and also provides any person who undergoes gender reassignment treatments as a minor a legal claim for compensatory and punitive damages against the person performing the procedure.

The language of the bill addresses any procedure that “changes the body” of a minor to correspond to the opposite of their biological sex. The bill specifically identifies castration, vaginoplasty, vasectomies, and ovariectomies. It bans any type of plastic surgery to change the sexual characteristics of the face, breast implants, and fat implants in the gluteal region.

The proposed law also prohibits the administration of hormone treatments for reassignment or blocking puberty.

The bill prohibits the use of any federal taxpayer funds for the banned procedures and restricts facilities located on federal property or Indian tribal territory from administering them. Any college or university receiving federal funding would be banned from providing instruction on the prohibited treatments.

The restrictions set out in the bill would not apply to patients diagnosed with a medical condition requiring a treatment otherwise prohibited. The exceptions are intended to cover any minor suffering from physical injury, disease, or disorder making a procedure necessary for their care.

Greene’s bill has 12 House Republican co-sponsors, including Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Burgess Owens (R-UT).

Two GOP candidates for the Senate in this year’s general election, Blake Masters from Arizona and J.D. Vance from Ohio, have publicly said they support the new bill.

Greene appeared on the Thursday broadcast of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Fox News before introducing the bill on Friday. She told Carlson that the banned procedures constitute child abuse by persons in positions of authority.

Greene said that so-called “gender-affirming care” is a “disgusting and appalling” assault on children. She added that the banned “care” is an “embarrassment to our country.”

Greene’s federal bill is modeled on an Alabama state law that outlaws puberty blockers, hormone treatments, or sex reassignment surgeries on minors. That law also makes performing prohibited procedures a felony.

A federal court has placed a temporary injunction blocking the Alabama law as the case challenging it makes its way through litigation. The judge imposing the stay on the law held the state government had not shown sufficient evidence that the banned treatments are “experimental.”
