Lawmakers Clash With Secret Service Director Over Trump Assassination Attempts

A task force hearing on the assassination attempts against President-elect Donald Trump devolved into chaos Thursday as Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) and acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe engaged in a heated shouting match. The hearing, part of an investigation into the agency’s performance, exposed deep frustrations about presidential security lapses.

The session focused on two attempts on Trump’s life earlier this year. In July, Trump was shot in the ear during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Another attempt was thwarted by the Secret Service at a Florida golf course shortly after. Both incidents have raised serious concerns about the agency’s effectiveness.

Rowe attempted to defend his leadership by recounting his response to the 9/11 attacks. Fallon interrupted, demanding answers specific to the agency’s handling of Trump’s security. “I’m not asking you that. I’m asking you—” Fallon said before being interrupted himself.

“Do not invoke 9/11 for political purposes,” Rowe shot back, adding, “I am a public servant who has served this nation.” The exchange escalated, with both men shouting over each other before Rowe declared, “You are out of line.”

The hearing is the second public session held by the task force, which is expected to release a report with findings and recommendations by Dec. 13. The combative atmosphere reflected the high stakes and intense scrutiny surrounding Trump’s safety as he prepares to assume office.

Lawmakers emphasized the urgency of identifying and addressing gaps in presidential security. With two assassination attempts already thwarted, ensuring Trump’s safety is seen as a critical priority for the incoming administration.
