The Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the state of New York, challenging policies that prevent cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the lawsuit Wednesday, citing violations that obstruct federal law.
The lawsuit names Gov. Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, and DMV Commissioner Mark Schroeder, specifically targeting the Green Light Law. The measure allows illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses while restricting access to state records for immigration authorities. Additionally, it mandates that individuals be notified if their information is requested by federal agencies.
Bondi emphasized that this legal action follows a similar lawsuit against Illinois and serves as a warning to other states that refuse to cooperate with immigration enforcement. She stated that any jurisdiction blocking federal efforts will face legal consequences.
New York leaders have defended their stance, arguing that state policies protect immigrant communities. However, critics say the restrictions prevent law enforcement from properly identifying individuals and ensuring public safety.
The Trump administration has made clear that it will not tolerate state-level policies that interfere with federal enforcement, marking a shift from the approach of former President Joe Biden’s administration.
As the case moves forward, the Justice Department is expected to take additional action against other states with similar sanctuary policies.
