Iran escalated its conflict with Israel by launching over 200 missiles, marking the largest missile strike in the ongoing tensions. Israel’s defense systems, with crucial support from the U.S. military, intercepted most of the missiles, although a few hit southern and central Israel, causing damage but no significant casualties.
The missile attack was in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes that recently killed top Hezbollah leaders, including Hassan Nasrallah. Israel has been targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon in response to rocket fire from the group. The conflict has devastated parts of Lebanon, with over 1,000 deaths and more than a million people displaced.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Iran had made a serious error and promised that Israel would retaliate forcefully. He warned Iran and its allies that Israel would continue to defend itself and launch further strikes as necessary.
President Joe Biden reaffirmed the U.S.’s full backing of Israel, saying that the U.S. played an active role in defending Israel by intercepting many of the incoming missiles. Biden added that the U.S. would work closely with Israel to respond to Iran’s actions.
As tensions continue to rise, the U.N. Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting to address the increasing threat of a wider regional conflict.
