House GOP Targets Special Counsel’s Records After Election

The House Judiciary Committee has taken steps to investigate special counsel Jack Smith’s team, including a potential effort to expose the names of his prosecutors. A committee spokesperson emphasized that “everything is on the table” as lawmakers intensify their oversight efforts.

In a letter sent to Smith, the committee demanded the preservation of all records related to his investigations. Republicans worry that Smith’s office may attempt to erase or alter evidence following President Donald Trump’s reelection.

The letter referenced media reports that Smith’s team had prepared for a Trump victory. “We are concerned that the Office of Special Counsel may attempt to purge relevant records,” it read. Lawmakers also accused the office of resisting transparency and accountability.

Smith has been at the center of two major cases against Trump, including charges related to the 2020 election and alleged mishandling of classified materials. The latter case faced a significant setback when a federal judge dismissed it, citing the improper appointment of Smith.

Sources close to Smith’s office revealed he intends to continue his work despite the changing political landscape. Reports from CNN described Smith as reluctant to disband his team, with insiders noting, “He’s not going to be the one to say, ‘I’m going to fold the tent.’”

On Friday, Smith requested a pause in one of Trump’s cases to reassess his strategy. Republicans, however, are pushing forward with their own investigation, promising to hold Smith and his team accountable for what they view as politically motivated actions.
