The Republican-controlled House of Representatives has approved a bill to reduce Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg’s salary to $1 after he has consistently failed to perform in his job.
Throughout his time in office, Buttigieg has been known for failing to show up in times of crisis. While the Department of Transportation is not typically in the spotlight, the agency has faced a lot of crises and issues in the years since President Joe Biden took office and appointed Buttigieg — including mass airline cancellations, tense railroad negotiations and a supply chain crisis. Buttigieg was on a nearly three-month paternity leave during the supply chain crisis and a Portugal vacation during the railroad negotiations.
Beyond those larger crises, Buttigieg has been conveniently missing in action during many significant transportation-related incidents — such as the train derailment and resulting toxic chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio.
I asked Sec. Buttigieg why it took him almost 3 weeks to come and speak to residents of East Palestine.

After his repeated failures, Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) introduced a measure to reduce Buttigieg’s salary to $1. The measure was passed on Tuesday by a voice vote as an amendment to the House’s 2024 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Greene described the measure as one to “fire” Buttigieg for his alleged misuse of taxpayer dollars — as the transportation secretary is also known for his overuse of taxpayer-funded private planes.
“I’m proud to announce my amendment to FIRE Pete Buttigieg just PASSED the House. Pothole Pete staged fake bike rides to the White House and used private planes funded by taxpayers to receive awards for the way certain people have sex,” Greene wrote. “American taxpayers should not be on the hook for paying for his lavish trips or his salary.”

However, despite Greene’s comments, the measure does not technically fire the transportation secretary — instead reducing his salary to $1.
“Pete Buttigieg doesn’t serve the American people. It took him weeks to visit East Palestine after a toxic train derailment happened on his watch,” the Georgia congresswoman added in a follow-up post. “My amendment to cut his salary to $1 is paying him too much.”

X users shared numerous clips of Buttigieg’s failures, blunders and lies in response to Greene’s bill, including one of the “fake bike ride” mentioned in the Georgia congresswoman’s initial post. This incident happened in 2021, when Buttigieg staged a bike ride in an attempt to show his commitment to the far-left climate change cause. He was caught on video pulling the bike out of an SUV, then riding it to a White House meeting for the cameras while the gas-guzzling SUV followed close behind.

The amendment, which was introduced by Marjorie Taylor Greene, was brought forward due to Buttigieg’s failure to “serve the American people.”
