New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has come under fire after openly stating that an immigrant with an unresolved legal status was living in his home. Trump’s border czar Tom Homan has vowed to investigate and warned that Murphy could face prosecution if he has violated immigration law.
Speaking at a public event, Murphy revealed that an individual in his “broader universe” had not completed their immigration process and that he had given them a place to stay. He then made a direct challenge to federal officials, saying, “Good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her.” His statement raised immediate questions about whether he had admitted to violating U.S. law.
Homan addressed the situation on Fox News, calling Murphy’s remarks irresponsible and legally questionable. “If he’s knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien, that’s a violation of Title 8, United States Code 1324,” he stated. “I will seek prosecution or the secretary will seek prosecution.” He made it clear that the matter would be investigated and that authorities would not let it slide.
Murphy’s office later tried to walk back the remarks, claiming they had been misinterpreted. A spokesperson insisted that the person in question was a legal resident and that Murphy had not actually taken in an illegal immigrant. However, many have questioned why Murphy would issue a challenge to federal authorities if there was no legal issue at stake.
Trump’s administration has ramped up immigration enforcement in recent weeks, with ICE conducting major raids and deporting thousands of illegal immigrants. Homan has been a strong advocate for ending sanctuary policies, arguing that they allow criminals to remain in the country and undermine the rule of law.
As the controversy unfolds, Murphy’s remarks have put him at the center of the ongoing battle over immigration enforcement. Federal authorities are now looking into the situation, and if Murphy’s statements indicate a violation of the law, Homan has made it clear that action will be taken.
