GOP Lawmakers Push To Impeach Judges Blocking Trump’s Orders

House Republicans are moving forward with efforts to impeach federal judges who have ruled against key Trump administration policies, accusing them of obstructing the executive branch’s constitutional authority.

Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) is preparing articles of impeachment against U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer of New York, who recently ruled against the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), preventing it from accessing Treasury data. Crane and other Republicans argue that this ruling interferes with Trump’s ability to oversee federal agencies.

Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) is drafting impeachment charges against Judge John McConnell Jr. of Rhode Island, whose ruling blocked Trump’s freeze on federal spending. Clyde has accused McConnell of judicial activism, saying his decision directly opposes the will of the elected government.

Trump has called attention to the issue, stating in an Oval Office briefing that Congress may need to “look at the judges” responsible for blocking his administration’s actions. Vice President J.D. Vance has also voiced concerns that some judges are exceeding their authority.

Conservative lawmakers, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), have joined the impeachment push, arguing that these rulings are an attempt to hinder Trump’s agenda. Greene has pledged to support efforts to hold judges accountable for rulings that she says undermine executive authority.

While House Republicans may have the votes to advance impeachment, convicting a judge requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate, making removal unlikely. The last federal judge was impeached and removed in 2010.
