Recent reports indicate that nearly half of federal government employees are preparing to resist President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration. This potential opposition suggests that Trump may benefit from taking steps to improve accountability within federal agencies.
Polling by RMG Research shows that 42% of federal workers plan to oppose Trump’s policies. The resistance is especially strong among Democrat-identifying employees, with 73% saying they will actively work against his agenda. Meanwhile, 89% of Republican government employees support the new administration.
To address this challenge, Trump might consider reinstating the Schedule F employment classification. This policy would give the administration the ability to reassign or remove employees who refuse to implement directives. Strengthening accountability could help ensure that federal agencies operate effectively and without political interference.
The poll also highlights a clear gap between government employees and the general public. Among Main Street Americans, 59% support Trump’s agenda, while only 28% back bureaucratic resistance. The political elite, on the other hand, are far more likely to support internal opposition.
Federal workers are responsible for executing policies set by elected officials. Implementing reforms to reinforce this principle could help the administration stay focused on its objectives and better serve the American people.
By taking proactive steps to strengthen government accountability, Trump can reduce bureaucratic resistance and increase the effectiveness of his leadership. Revisiting policies like Schedule F may offer a practical solution to this growing concern.
