Dr. Anthony Fauci wants the United States to go easy on China and stop being “accusatory” about the communist nation’s role in covering up the origins, spread, and data related to COVID-19.
Despite the East Asian country’s track record of lying and fudging the numbers about the deadly virus, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director is still quick to give China the benefit of the doubt more than a year into the pandemic.
“I mean, it’s obviously in China’s interest to find out exactly what it is, and the ‘is’ of the natural theory would be to find that link, so you have to keep looking for it,” Fauci said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday.
The medical adviser admitted that “we need better access to all the information” but chose to defend China and warn the United States against being “accusatory.”
“I mean, obviously you want openness and cooperation. One of the ways you can get it is don’t be accusatory. Try to get both a forensic, a scientific, and an investigational approach,” Fauci said. “I think the accusatory part about it is only going to get them to pull back even more. We’ve got to do it in a combination of diplomacy, scientific, forensic investigation, and do it in a way that the people of good faith, not who wanted to blame, but people in good faith are really trying to find out what the origin is.”
Fauci, whose expertise is supposed to be immunology, not foreign policy, said the United States and China are both doing “a lot of pointing of fingers” but need to “keep an open mind and go after the truth.”

When asked if he thought China might have covered up a Wuhan Institute of Virology lab leak or even designed a bioweapon, Fauci said he doesn’t want to speculate because “every time I say something like that, it will get completely taken out of context and go into the Twitter world like crazy.”
“I’m going to leave that to other people and not surmise and guess whose interest it is. It’s not helpful because everything you say gets completely taken out of context.”
The anchor agreed with him and said it would be like a media personality talking about “what it’s like to be an NBA player.”
“I wouldn’t know — I’m terrible at basketball,” MSNBC’s Willie Geist said. “You’re about medicine. You’re about health. You’re about studying that. These questions about China, I mean, that’s up to the politicians to sort through.”
Fauci’s newly released emails show he was quick to brush off concerns that China was covering up COVID-19 data at the beginning of the pandemic. When a scientist reached out to the White House Coronavirus Task Force member to explain how his models of the outbreak in Wuhan show “the data posted by China is not only garbage, it has misled the world into a false sense of security,” Fauci forwarded the email to someone else at the National Institutes of Health and said it was “too long for me to read.”
“I truly believe the outbreak tsunami in the USA is either already happened or is about to happen. As you know, as soon as a surge is sensed, the tsunami will immediately follow. I believe we missed the containment boat quite a while ago,” the scientist warned.
