A newly released report from the Department of Justice’s Inspector General has uncovered significant shortcomings in the FBI’s handling of child sexual abuse cases, raising serious questions about the agency’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children. The report, which reviewed over 300 cases from 2021 to 2023, found that the FBI failed to adhere to mandatory reporting requirements in nearly 50% of the cases, allowing numerous instances of unforgivable child abuse to go unreported.
According to the findings, the FBI only managed to report suspected child abuse to local law enforcement within the required 24-hour window in 43% of the cases. This alarming statistic highlights a persistent problem within the agency, which has struggled to effectively manage and respond to these critical cases, despite reforms implemented after the Larry Nassar scandal.
One particularly disturbing example cited in the report involved the FBI delaying action for more than a year after receiving an allegation against a registered sex offender. During this time, the offender reportedly continued to abuse another victim, illustrating the severe consequences of the FBI’s failure to act swiftly and appropriately.
The report comes after the FBI’s well-publicized failures in the Nassar case, where delays in addressing allegations allowed the former USA Gymnastics doctor to continue his sexual abuse for months before his arrest in 2016. The latest findings suggest that, despite promises of reform, the FBI continues to struggle with effectively managing and reporting cases of child abuse.
A senior FBI official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, acknowledged these failures but defended the bureau by citing challenges such as overwhelming caseloads, an increase in tips, and budget cuts. However, these justifications are unlikely to satisfy the public or those concerned about the FBI’s ability to protect children from disgusting child abuse.
The Inspector General’s report calls for immediate action to address these critical deficiencies within the FBI.
