A new government efficiency initiative has led to the recovery of $1.9 billion that had been misplaced under the Biden administration’s Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, announced the findings on Friday, marking another major discovery in the effort to eliminate wasteful federal spending.
The recovered funds, initially designated for financial services, had remained unaccounted for until HUD Secretary Scott Turner launched an internal review. With the assistance of DOGE, Turner’s department identified and de-obligated the funds, allowing them to be redirected for federal use.

Turner announced the formation of a dedicated HUD task force on Thursday, stating that his agency would closely examine all expenditures moving forward. “We will be very detailed and deliberate about every dollar spent in serving tribal, rural, and urban communities across America,” he said.
The latest recovery adds to a growing list of inefficiencies uncovered by DOGE. Just days earlier, Turner reported that his department had already identified $260 million in excess spending. Other agencies have also come under scrutiny, with the Environmental Protection Agency canceling a controversial Biden-era grant and reviewing additional financial mismanagement.
Musk, who has been a vocal advocate for fiscal responsibility, commented on the discovery, calling it “astounding” how much taxpayer money could be saved with proper oversight. He shared details of the financial contracts involved in the HUD case, highlighting the need for further government accountability.

With DOGE’s investigations expanding, federal agencies are expected to face increased scrutiny over how taxpayer funds are allocated. Turner has indicated that HUD’s audits are far from over, with more financial reviews underway.
