Gov. Ron DeSantis has launched an independent state investigation into the second assassination attempt on President Donald Trump, citing concerns over federal agencies’ impartiality. DeSantis signed an executive order giving Florida’s Attorney General’s Office and state law enforcement agencies the authority to take the lead in the case, bypassing federal investigators.
During a press conference, DeSantis emphasized that it is not in the best interest of the country to allow the same federal agencies prosecuting Trump to investigate the attempt on his life. “Florida has jurisdiction over the most serious offense, which is attempted murder,” DeSantis stated, adding that state authorities are better equipped to ensure transparency and public trust.
Ryan Routh, a longtime Democrat donor and critic of Trump, was arrested near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course, armed with a rifle. Although federal prosecutors charged Routh with minor gun offenses, DeSantis and Attorney General Ashley Moody believe more serious state charges are necessary.
Moody has pledged a thorough investigation, stating, “Florida is launching its own investigation to provide trust and transparency.” The investigation will explore whether Routh’s ties to international forces or intelligence agencies influenced his attempt on Trump’s life.
DeSantis criticized previous federal investigations, such as the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, which left many unanswered questions. He assured the public that Florida’s investigation would uncover the full truth and restore confidence in the process.
