Denmark Announces Major Military Expansion To Strengthen National Defense

Denmark is preparing to significantly increase its military budget in response to heightened security threats in Europe. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen addressed parliament, warning that the country must take immediate steps to bolster its defenses.

Frederiksen described the current security environment as the most dangerous since the Cold War, stating that Denmark must prepare for any potential escalation. She highlighted the need for rapid military improvements to ensure stability and security.

According to Danish public broadcaster DR, the government will introduce a 50-billion-kroner ($7 billion) defense fund for 2025-2026. Initial discussions considered doubling the amount, but officials determined that acquiring the necessary military equipment would be difficult due to supply constraints.

One of the main areas of focus for Denmark’s defense upgrade is the acquisition of air defense systems. The country currently lacks this capability, making it a top priority for future military investments.

If the proposed spending increase moves forward, Denmark’s defense budget will rise to 3% of GDP, surpassing NATO’s 2% target. Former President Donald Trump has urged NATO members to raise defense spending to 5%, while the U.S. currently allocates about 3.4% of GDP to its military.

Denmark has been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters, providing $7.52 billion in military aid and $741 million in civilian assistance since Russia’s invasion in 2022, according to the Danish foreign ministry.
