Angry Democrats and their allies are targeting the Department of Defense and the Army for their normal procedure of wiping phone records clean during a White House transition. As the new administration takes power, the old phones are purged and prepared for their new users.
That’s bad news for those who believe that the government is attempting to hide information on the Jan. 6 events at the Capitol last year.
Government watchdog American Oversight filed a Freedom of Information Act public records request to obtain communications from top defense officials after the incident. They found through litigation that standard procedure does not preserve texts from one administration to the next.
In March of this year, both the Department of Defense and Army wrote in a court filing that when employees separate from either, they hand in their government-issued phones. Texts from these no longer employed by the DOD “were not preserved and therefore could not be searched.”
Court records published on the website of the watchdog group American Oversight indicate that the Pentagon “wiped” the government-issued phones of senior Defense Department and Army officials who were in charge of mobilizing the National Guard. https://t.co/l8dYvxa6TP

That phone, of course, is wiped and reassigned to another person. But that explanation is not good enough for those convinced that former President Donald Trump led a massive conspiracy that day in Washington.
On Tuesday, the government watchdog asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to start an investigation into the practice. Specifically targeted were former acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller and former Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy.
This follows the discovery that some Secret Service text messages from Jan. 6 were lost in a software transition and believed to be unrecoverable.
There are records from some Army leaders who remain in government that are also requested, and the military branch says it is searching for them. It is expected to be finished by the end of September.
American Oversight claims it is dedicated to investigating the Jan. 6 incident and other broader “attacks on democracy.” It has also branched out into what it says were illegal attempts to undermine the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
What is more likely, however, is that the coordinated effort by the left is merely intent on destroying former President Trump and empowering Democrats. This never-ending inquiry is a conclusion that won’t stop until it finds “evidence” to support what’s already been decided.
