Democrats Face Backlash For Opposing Immigration Bill Targeting Sex Offenders

A Republican-led bill to deport illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes passed the House of Representatives, but 158 Democrats voted against it, sparking criticism from supporters. The Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), passed 266-158, gaining bipartisan support from 51 Democrats.

The bill focuses on deporting individuals convicted of sexual offenses, conspiracy to commit such crimes, or domestic violence. Mace, defending the legislation, said it was about protecting women and children. “Those who oppose this are ignoring the safety of our communities,” she said.

Democrats opposing the measure, including Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), dismissed it as fearmongering and a distraction from broader immigration reform. Jayapal claimed Republicans were exploiting crime to stoke division rather than addressing systemic issues.

Mace’s past actions have drawn skepticism about her motivations. Who has distanced herself from Trump, she reportedly sought media attention during the January 6 protests by suggesting she confront protesters for publicity. Despite participating in the persecution of conservatives over that day, Mace later endorsed Trump, raising questions about her political consistency.

Reps. Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez (D-WA) and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) were among the Democrats who supported the bill, citing the need to address public safety concerns. Their votes reflect a growing bipartisan acknowledgment of the challenges tied to illegal immigration.

This bill is part of a larger Republican push to highlight border-related issues, including crime and public safety.
