Sugar Grove Nursery witnessed unprecedented generosity as customers offered purchasing Christmas trees for hurricane-affected families across western North Carolina.
“People want helping neighbors celebrate despite hardships,” said Kayla Wilcox, whose family operation faced significant losses from Hurricane Helene. The farm lost access to several fields after multiple landslides scarred their mountain property.
The initiative gained momentum as word spread through social media. “Customers call daily asking to sponsor trees for local families,” Wilcox said, noting emotional impact of community response.
Sugar Grove maintains choose-and-cut operations despite challenges. Nearly 500 families traditionally select trees at their farm annually, continuing traditions spanning three generations.
Local organizations assist matching donated trees with recipients. “Many families faced choosing between repairs or holiday celebrations,” Wilcox said. “This removes that burden.”
