Chuck Schumer Thinks Americans Are “Dumb And Stupid”

It’s difficult to grasp how insulting Chuck Schumer’s threat to nuke the filibuster was Monday afternoon. Tuesday, he doubled down. If Republicans didn’t support the Voting Rights Act, he would. He also encouraged his members, Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, to exert pressure. He needed party unity to push the Republicans’ hand. Tuesday afternoon, he had it all back.

Schumer’s fiery rhetoric doesn’t match reality. He can’t threaten the Republicans when he lacks the Democratic votes to make it happen. But this isn’t new. We knew Manchin and Sinema were against it. We’ve heard of other Democrats who are silently opposed. It’s all old news since the 2020 election. But Schumer believes two things: first, Americans are stupid and believe Republicans hold this up. Any reasonable person knows that Manchin and Sinema impede the Democrats’ and President Joe Biden’s agenda.

Second, Schumer believes he has power in the Senate right now. The Democrats are panicking ahead of this year’s midterm elections, and it’s every member for themselves. Manchin (and Sinema, to a lesser extent) have effectively killed the Democratic agenda. When Schumer says there is no Democratic deal, he admits defeat, and the White House has been silent.

The whole thing smells desperate. The Democrats may lose control of one or both chambers of Congress this year. No vocal progressive wants to acknowledge the issue. They want the power to pass anything with a simple majority so they can keep pushing the country left. But by allowing themselves that option, they open the door for the Republicans to take over.
