A suspected leader of hitmen for Mexico’s Gulf Cartel has been arrested by Border Patrol agents in Michigan. Detroit Sector Chief Patrol Agent John Morris confirmed the capture of Melquiades Salgado-Garza, a man with a history of serious offenses, including burglary and forgery.
The arrest was part of a broader effort to locate and detain illegal immigrants with criminal backgrounds. Over the weekend, agents from the Sault Ste. Marie Station apprehended a suspected member of Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang known for its violent activities. The individual was caught attempting to reclaim a seized vehicle.
Meanwhile, Border Patrol agents from the Marysville Station arrested a Mexican national who has been caught illegally entering the U.S. ten times since 1999. The suspect is currently being processed for removal.
President Donald Trump’s administration has intensified enforcement measures, with ICE and Border Patrol working to detain and deport criminals who entered the U.S. illegally. More than a thousand illegal immigrants have been taken into custody in recent weeks.
Concerns over cartel activity have grown, with federal officials warning that Mexican criminal groups may escalate their tactics. Reports suggest that cartels are exploring the use of explosive drones to attack Border Patrol agents. President Trump has formally designated cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, a move that expands federal authority in targeting them.
With federal immigration enforcement ramping up, authorities continue to track cartel-affiliated criminals and prevent them from establishing further operations within U.S. communities.
