A U.S. Border Patrol sector along the northern border has reported a record-breaking surge in illegal immigration under the Biden-Harris administration. The Swanton Sector, which spans New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, has seen nearly 20,000 illegal crossings in fiscal year 2024, more than in the past 17 years combined.
Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia stated that those arrested come from 97 different countries, further demonstrating the global nature of the immigration crisis affecting the United States. The sector had not seen such high numbers in recent years, with only 6,925 apprehensions in 2023 and 1,065 in 2022.
This spike in illegal crossings at the northern border reflects a broader trend of increased migration under the current administration’s policies. Critics argue that the Biden-Harris immigration approach has weakened U.S. border security, resulting in surges at both the southern and northern borders.
The Swanton Sector’s data is particularly troubling given that illegal crossings from Canada were far lower during President Donald Trump’s tenure. The contrast between the two administrations is stark, with the current surge being blamed on the perceived leniency of Biden-Harris immigration policies.
While the Department of Homeland Security has taken steps to speed up the asylum process for those entering from Canada, questions remain about the administration’s ability to manage the growing crisis. As more illegal immigrants cross the northern border, many Americans are calling for stronger border enforcement and a reevaluation of current policies.
