The Biden-Harris administration is facing backlash after a video surfaced of USAID administrator Samantha Power discussing efforts to keep the lights on in Ukraine while thousands of Americans remain in the dark following Hurricane Helene. The video, in which Power highlights the US’ commitment to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, has sparked outrage, especially among Americans still waiting for power restoration.
Power shared a video from Ukraine, standing at an energy substation damaged by Russian forces, explaining the US’ efforts to replace transformers and protect Ukraine’s energy grid ahead of winter. “Thanks to the support of the American people, USAID is working with Ukrainians to keep the lights on and the heat going this winter,” she said.
While Power celebrated these international efforts, over 700,000 homes and businesses across South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia remain without power, according to reports. Critics argue that the administration’s focus should be on helping its own citizens before investing in foreign infrastructure projects. One respondent, identifying as Hockey Mom, expressed frustration, writing, “Americans are dying here. We don’t care about Ukraine.”
Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell also weighed in, condemning the administration’s tone-deafness. “Americans still don’t have power from Helene. Meanwhile, Samantha Power is doing videos in Ukraine proudly giving away tens of millions of US tax dollars,” Grenell remarked.
Adding to the criticism, whistleblowers from FEMA have reportedly informed Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) that the federal government’s response to Helene has been slow, with FEMA’s budget stretched thin. Despite tens of billions allocated to support Ukraine, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has warned that FEMA may not have enough funds to support American disaster relief through the end of hurricane season.
