Armed Suspect ‘From Chicago’ Flees Armed Store Clerk In Florida

A man carrying a shotgun was arrested in Florida after trying to rob a convenience store only to find out that the employee had his own gun.

The New York Post reports the exchange between the would-be robber, Rakim Stephen Tate, and the store employee after Tate walked around the store for a few minutes with the employee out of view of the camera.

“I don’t mean no harm, I’m just not from around here,” Tate said to the store clerk. “I got a big (expletive) (expletive) gun, but I’m not from around here is what I’m saying. I’m from Chicago bro.”

After that, it is clear that Tate was not expecting the employee to also be carrying a gun. He asks the clerk what type of weapon he is holding and the employee answers him though it is difficult to hear.

Tate was arrested in Escambia County six days after the recording was made. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office posted a recap of the events under the headline “Robbery Attempt.”

The Western Journal writes, “Unbeknownst to the ‘would-be’ robber, a store employee had watched him arm himself before entering the store. This employee headed to the backroom to arm himself (with his own personal gun).”

The employee was actually off-camera for most of the initial moments of the encounter, but the Western Journal states, “Seconds later, when he sees the employee return, he freezes…oh boy. The employee returned to the counter holding his own gun toward the befuddled attempted robber. He then fumbles for words, resorting to meaningless babble about being from Chicago. Words seem to fail you when your felony attempt is thwarted by lawful and righteous force. Thankfully, he decides that it is not the time for a robbery, and he slowly exits the store.”

For a while, there was inaccurate information that guns were illegal in Chicago, but as the AP points out, that is not true. Many weapons, however, are banned in Chicago and the gun laws in the city are much more stringent than the ones in Florida and it is clear that this criminal was not expecting the store clerk to be armed and ready for the confrontation.
