Democrats who were elected to the Texas legislature and are duty-sworn to carry out the business of the citizens of their state have pretty literally flown the coop.
In protest of Texas’ new election integrity bill that includes legal reforms to expand voting opportunities while increasing standard security measures to help ensure a return to electoral normalcy after the Covid-19 pandemic, enough Democrats left the state to delay the bill.
By denying the legislature a quorum, they have temporarily left the state unable to do business. The Governor has pledged to have them arrested when they return to Texas and brought to the capitol in Austin to carry out their duties.
While it appears that the flight from Texas will finally amount to not much more than a publicity stunt and delay tactic, it is unknown at this time exactly when and how it will all play out.
While their sudden vacation may upset their constituents who are left without legislators to handle all other regular business, the Texas “refugees” are the darlings of Democrats in D.C. and media members who enjoy the spectacle while feeling no inconvenience.
Vice President Kamala Harris said the Texas Democrats were “showing extraordinary courage and commitment” and cheerfully exclaimed, “I applaud them standing for the rights of all Americans and all Texans to express their voice through their vote, unencumbered. I will say that they are leaders who are marching in the path that so many others before did when they fought, and many died for our right to vote.”
President Biden spoke on July 14 in support of the opposition to the proposed Texas voting bill. Biden called state election integrity bills “un-American” and “undemocratic” and continued his attack against former President Trump. Biden called federal legislative efforts to override properly enacted state election laws under the constitution “a national imperative.”
The Texas Democrats’ walkout has been commended by the Washington Post. CNN has also praised the party, saying they were “doing everything possible to slow the wave of restrictive new voting laws inspired by former President Donald Trump’s lies about widespread election fraud and already enacted this year by some Republican-led states, including Florida and Georgia.”
The Democrats appear to have lost sight of the irony because they are the same individuals who think the Senate filibuster is horrible. After all, it denies the majority the ability to act in the way they like while thanking Texas Democrats’ minority membership for halting the Democratic process.
